Team from Ericsson Middle East & Africa Advises Pakistan on 5G Deployment

During a discussion with Ericsson MMEA, Zeeshan Gaya, Head of Strategy, Pelumi Fadairo, Strategy Manager, and Wahaj Arshad, Chief Technical Officer of Ericsson Pakistan, reviewed subjects pertaining to the short-, long-, and midrange strategies of the telecom industry as well as investments. The member of telecom informed the delegation that despite the global economic pressures that are present, Pakistan is still a resilient and potential market for new entrants, and that in the past two years, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued more than 100 plus license's to domestic and foreign companies for smart device manufacturing, Internet of Things, Telecom Infrastructure Providers, and Long Distance International. Telecom Regulator Headless for Almost Two Months

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has been operating without a leader for almost 50 days, as the government has yet to name the telecom regulator's chairman. Major General (retired) Amir Azeem Bajwa resigned as chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) on January 2, 2023, after completing his four-year term. The government did not grant him an extension. According to reports, the Cabinet Division verbally requested the former chairman to continue working for an extra three weeks, which he declined. The Cabinet Division has commenced the procedure for the appointment of the new member, which will be followed by the appointment of the Chairman. Dr. Kawar Siddique Khokhar, Member (Compliance and Enforcement) of the PTA, concluded his four-year term on January 10, 2023 and resigned from his position shortly after the previous chairman. Shahbaz Sharif, Pakistan's current Prime Minister, recently launched the BOP Freelancer Segment and Credit Card with the intention of enhancing freelancers' access to financial resources and boosting Pakistan's capacity to bring in foreign currency.   The Ministry of Information Technology and Communications is responsible for launching and funding the National Freelance Training Program, which resulted in the establishment of approximately 20 training center's dispersed across the country. An official of the Ministry of Information Technology stated that as many as 8,647 graduates were trained through international standard information technology courses, and that these students contributed to the economy of the country by earning $23 million through freelancing after completing their training. According to him, the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) accepted the registration of about 1,638 new information technology firms in the year 2022. In addition, the PSEB accepted the registration of 761 contact center's and 1,463 freelancers. A national assembly panel was informed that the Tharparkar District has been having problems with mobile connectivity for the past six months. On Monday, it was brought to the attention of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication that the Tharparkar area has been experiencing difficulties with cellphone connectivity for the past half a year. At the meeting, which was presided over by the committee chairman Mir Khan Muhammad Jamali, the lawmaker Mahesh Kumar Malini stated that a complaint had been filed in this respect around six months ago; nevertheless, the issue has not been resolved. The Information Technology and Information Technology Services Industry of Pakistan realized a trade surplus of $1.17 billion (87.47 percent of total ICT export remittances) from July through December of the fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23). This represents an increase of 19.96 percent when compared to the trade surplus of $972 million that was realized during the same time period in FY22. The official documents of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) stated that the information technology and information technology enabled services (IT & IT's) industry has delivered the highest trade surplus across products and services, second only to the textile sector. The information technology and information technology services sector of Pakistan is currently selling its wares in more than 170 nations and territories.
