Tharparkar District Facing Mobile Connectivity Issues for 6 Months

A national assembly panel was informed that the Tharparkar District has been having problems with mobile connectivity for the past six months. On Monday, it was brought to the attention of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication that the Tharparkar area has been experiencing difficulties with cellphone connectivity for the past half a year.

At the meeting, which was presided over by the committee chairman Mir Khan Muhammad Jamali, the lawmaker Mahesh Kumar Malini stated that a complaint had been filed in this respect around six months ago; nevertheless, the issue has not been resolved.

The Director General of Enforcement for the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) shared with the committee that the regulatory body is working to find a solution to the underlying problem in the region. According to the Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT), the problem is the result of a very minor technical issue that will be fixed in the near future.

A number of MNAs have also voiced their dissatisfaction with the quality of internet connectivity in the Red Zone of Islamabad and the fact that only 2G service is offered in the vicinity of the Parliament Lodges.

Officials from the PTA explained to the panel that fines are issued to telecom companies when their services are subpar. Nonetheless, despite the regulator's best efforts, policy roadblocks have prevented progress from being made in improving the quality of services offered throughout the nation. According to the officials, the Authority had requested that a tower be built in the Quetta Red Zone in order to improve the quality of telecom services in the area; however, the request had been languishing for three years at this point. In addition, the Quetta Municipal Committee is said to have requested an increase in the prices for cable laying, according to the officials.

The demands of the MoITT for existing and new schemes for the public sector development programmer (PSDP) in the fiscal year 2023-24 were also authorized by the committee.

MNA Mouland Abdul Akbar Chitrali was extremely critical of Telenor on the quality of services provided in Chitral. The congressman commented that it is ironic that we are discussing technologies such as 5G and 6G when we do not even have reliable cell signals.

Officials from the PTA assuaged the MNA's concerns by assuring him that his complaint had been properly received, that Telenor had been notified of it, and that a response was being sought.

Mohsin Mushtaq, Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications, along with members of the lower house were present at the meeting.
